Stop Press! Adult Learners have the X Factor

Beverley Trotman presenting Gwyneth Young with her award. The Luton Adult Community Learning team were delighted when one of their talented 'adult learners' won the Family Learning Award at the Adult Learners' Awards held at the Barns Hotel in Bedford.

The awards, part of Adult Learner' Week, began with a warm welcome from Heather Maggs, Chairperson for The Learning Partnership and special guest X Factor finalist Beverly Trotman presented awards to all the winners.

Gwyneth Young, won the Family Learning Award after she gained a City and Guilds in Numeracy and Literacy Level 2, a course run by Luton Adult Community Learning. Nominated for the award by her teacher Mary McIntosh, Gwyneth's new found skills and confidence will help her to support her two daughters who are both dyslexic. Not content with resting on her laurels, Gwyneth has now applied to Barnfield College to study Childcare and Education.

Josie Bass is another learner supported by the Adult Community Learning team who won the Lifelong Learning Award last year. Josie, who is over 70, decided that she would like to learn how to use a computer and to learn a new language - with great success. She enjoyed studying at Lea Manor Community College so much that she has since gone on to explore many other subjects.

Roger Cannon, Service Manager of Luton Adult Community Learning said: "We are delighted to sponsor and be actively involved in Adult Learners Week. I know that returning to learn as an adult is not always easy and that many of the winners and nominees have overcome personal obstacles and difficulties to achieve their learning goals. Congratulations to everyone concerned."
