Entertainment

Choosing the right entertainment for your wedding reception is one of the most important tasks facing you. Get it right and your party will go with a swing, but beware - there is nothing more certain to turn your celebrations into a damp squib than an out of tune band or a poor quality disco.

Here are a few tips to help you choose:

Do your homework: If you are hiring a live band ask for a tape of one of their performances. If you choose a disco try to get along to one of their gigs to check them out and observe the reaction of the audience. Remember, there is likely to be a wide range of ages at your reception, so aim for a variety of music that will tempt both your teenage cousins and your granny onto the dance floor.

Book early: The golden rule of wedding planning applies to entertainment as to everything else. The best entertainers are booked up very quickly, often months or even years ahead. Choose the entertainer you want and make a provisional booking immediately.

Disco: Probably the most popular choice and the least expensive. Discuss in advance the sort of music you want played. Don't opt for a programme of the latest garage thrash music unless you want to drive your older relatives home early!

Live music: A live band is an excellent choice and can really give your reception an atmosphere of joyful celebration. There is a huge variety from the elegance of a string quartet to the foot tapping rhythms of a traditional jazz band, or the wild stomping of a ceilidh band. Check them out live or ask for a tape so you know what you are getting.

Fireworks: A firework display can provide a spectacular climax to your wedding reception. Make sure you opt for a reputable company that will carry out a proper site survey and risk assessment and provide expert employees and full public liability insurance. Try to get along to see one of their displays before booking. Expect to pay £500 upwards plus VAT.

Unusual ideas: Why not try something a bit different? A magician or you can give your reception a circus theme with a troupe of clowns, acrobats, jugglers or a fire-eater? One couple recently came up with idea of hiring a talented caricaturist to circulate at party firing off quick Sketches.
